The last group of Afghan nationals who were temporarily housed at Fort Pickett, Virginia, departed the base on Feb. 2.

Fort Pickett serves as the sixth of eight Department of Defense installations that support the resettlement of Afghan nationals.

"With Fort Pickett completing its Operation Allies Welcome efforts, we have now helped more than 68,000 Afghan evacuees settle in the United States," Robert J. Fenton, Jr., Senior Response Official for the organization, said.

The installations are known as "safe havens," according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) news release.

"I remain impressed with how our military members and the interagency team at Fort Pickett worked together to enable the resettlement of more than 10,300 Afghan personnel to their new communities here in America," Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, commander of U.S. Northern Command, said.

More than 68,000 Afghan nationals have been relocated across the United States, as of Feb. 2.

There are still around 7,000 Afghan nationals in the process of completing their resettlement. All of the Afghan evacuees have received important vaccinations; those include COVID-19 as well as polio, varicella, measles, mumps, and rubella, according to the DHS.
