Russian aircraft and airlines will be blocked from entering all domestic U.S. airspace, following new orders from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration this week.
In a release dated March 1, the DOT described the news, highlighting comments from Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
“The United States stands with our allies and partners across the world in responding to Putin’s unprovoked aggression against the people of Ukraine,” Buttigieg said in the release.
According to the release, the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and regulatory orders will suspend operations of all aircraft owned, certified, operated, registered, chartered, leased, or controlled by or benefiting any Russian citizen.
The order includes all commercial and privately owned aircraft or any aircraft owned or operated by a Russian citizen or company, the release said. In doing so, it effectively closes U.S. airspace to all Russian commercial air carriers and other Russian civil aircraft.
The orders are fully effective as of March 2 and there is currently no termination date set, the release said.
