The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Billy Nolen will serve as the acting Federal Aviation Administrator following the departure of current administrator Steve Dickson.
Nolen has spent the last 33 years gaining experience in the airline industry, starting out as an American Airlines pilot where he eventually took on managerial roles, overseeing the safe operation of American Airlines. According to the FAA, Nolen left his previous role as vice president of safety, security and quality at WestJet in order to work for the DOT.
“Billy Nolen has extensive expertise in aviation and a deep understanding of the vital role the FAA plays in ensuring the safety of the traveling public,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “We are grateful to Steve for his service and to Billy and Brad for stepping up to lead the FAA during this critical time.”
Bradley Mims, deputy administrator, will be taken on an expanded role during this interim period to focus on the FAA's workforce and the country's airports.
While Nolen presides over the FAA for the time being, the Biden administration is looking for a nominee to become the permanent administrator of the FAA, which carries a five-year term, according to the release.
