Biden admin nominates Dean Thompson as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Nepal

President Joe Biden recently announced his intention to appoint Dean R. Thompson as U.S. Ambassador to Nepal. 

The nomination was sent to the Senate last week and his appointment is pending at the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, congress.gov reported.

Thompson is a member of the Senior Foreign Service in the minister-counselor category, according to a White House press release. He is currently deputy assistant principal secretary for South and Central Asia at the State Department and acting assistant secretary from 2020 to 2021. Previously, Thompson was the deputy chief of mission of the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the deputy chief of mission and charge d’affaires, a.i., of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Romania.

Throughout his career, Thompson was also the consul general of the U.S. Consulate in Kolkata, India. Among other assignments, he served as director of the State Department’s executive secretariat staff, deputy director of the State Department Operations Center, director of the Operations Center Crisis Management Staff and deputy director for Information Resources Management of the Executive Secretariat.

Thompson earned a bachelor's degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, a master's degree from the University of Maryland School of Public Affairs and a master's degree in national security strategy from the National War College, National Defense University. His foreign languages are Romanian and Bengal.
