Murray Statement on Need for Wage and Overtime Protections for Home Care Workers

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Jan. 15, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Today, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement on the federal court ruling that would strike down a Department of Labor rule to extend minimum wage and overtime protections to home care workers.

“Home care workers, including tens of thousands in my home state of Washington, provide demanding and deeply personal support to families in need. There is no reason why these professionals, ninety percent of whom are women, should be denied the economic security that comes with basic minimum wage and overtime protections. I disagree with the federal district court’s decision and support the Administration in exploring legal options to ensure this critical step forward for millions of American workers is upheld."
