Grassley Welcomes GlaxoSmithKline Disclosure of Payments to Hospitals, Professional Associations

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on Aug. 22, 2008. It is reproduced in full below.

Senator Chuck Grassley released the following statement in response to GlaxoSmithKline’s decision to publicly disclose its grants to hospitals, professional associations, medical education companies, and other groups.

Last fall, Grassley and Senator Herb Kohl introduced the Physician Payments Sunshine Act in response to growing concerns about the lack of disclosure of the financial relationships between pharmaceutical companies and individual physicians. The legislation has garnered support from the medical community, including industry leaders, medical colleges, and professional societies.

Here is Grassley’s comment.

“GlaxoSmithKline is showing foresight by disclosing its third party payments and providing greater transparency in the pharmaceutical industry. I appreciate the company’s promotion of transparency and accountability. That benefits everyone, especially consumers."
