WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 5687, a crucial emergency supplemental appropriations bill to provide support to Puerto Rico following a series of recent earthquakes:
“Our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico have endured horrific natural disasters and the cruel deprivation of resources from the Trump Administration. While President Trump finally released some of the aid Congress already appropriated for hurricane relief, more support is needed following the island’s recent earthquakes. This additional emergency funding will greatly assist with continued near- and long-term recovery efforts.
“I’m particularly pleased that today’s package includes several tax provisions from the Ways and Means Committee that will encourage economic growth, support families, and strengthen communities. I urge the Senate to take up this bill without delay, and I hope the President will acknowledge the urgency of the moment, show greater compassion for our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico than he has previously, and promptly sign the measure into law."
