The Federal Aviation Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation announced it would distribute approximately $1 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help modernize 85 airports throughout the nation.

The awards will aim to increase the capacity of airport terminals in the U.S., improve energy efficiency, encourage competition and improve accessibility for anyone with disabilities, according to a July 7 DOT news release.

"Americans deserve modern airports that meet the needs of their families and growing passenger demand," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in the release. "Funded through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, today’s grants will improve airport terminals while also creating good jobs in communities across the country."

Additionally, two grants will be granted for the construction of new air traffic control towers, the release reported.

“The work that goes in to build safer, more accessible and sustainable terminals will provide opportunities for people across the nation," FAA Deputy Administrator A. Bradley Mims said in the release. "The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a critical investment not only in our nation’s infrastructure but an investment in the future of our country’s workforce."

The FAA, which typically prioritizes investments into runways, traffic-control towers and infrastructure, reported the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act helped provide dedicated funding for the modernization of airport terminals across the nation.

A list of planned changes may be found on the FAA's official website.
