Denver International Airport was awarded $60 million as a part of a billion dollar federal grant dispersed among more than a dozen airports across the United States.

The Federal Aviation Administration's associate administrator for airports Shannetta Griffin described the event as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a "major shot in the arm for airports and travelers around the country," according to a KDVR news report.

“This is very significant for an airport the size of Denver because they’re anticipating a capacity of 100 million annual passengers," Griffin said in the KDVR report.

No U.S. airports currently rank in the top 25 worldwide, although airport and government officials are hoping that the grant changes that, KDVR reported.

“This approximately $1 million that we are giving out this year are going to help airports build terminals that are sustainable, give access to disadvantaged communities, provide ADA access and also making sure that there’s competition being provided at these airports," Griffin said, according to KDVR.

DIA officials say the money will be used to make improvements to the baggage system, KDVR noted.

“This system is really going to help the passengers to see the efficiency, a greater efficiency in the way that that system operates," Griffin said, according to KDVR.

"America should have the world's best airports," U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in an Aug. 2 post on Twitter regarding the DIA's award. "We awarded @DENAirport $60M, which will expand capacity at the 3rd busiest airport in the world and help replace an aging baggage handling system."
