Giles: 'The U.S. will not be a refuge for those who actively attempt to evade responsibility in their home country'

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Enforcement and Removal Operations Los Angeles arrested a foreign fugitive and alleged member of the MS-13 gang.

Edwing Edgardo Ramos-Alvarado, 39, a citizen of El Salvador, was detained Jan. 3, the agency said in a Jan. 11 news release. He was the subject of an arrest warrant issued in his home country of El Salvador for crimes involving his illicit association with the well-known criminal gang MS-13.

“The U.S. will not be a refuge for those who actively attempt to evade responsibility in their home country,” Thomas P. Giles, field office director of ERO Los Angeles, said in a statement. “ICE officers serve as skilled and persistent members of law enforcement, showing the cooperative work necessary to keep the international community safe.”

Ramos-Alvarado was detained by U.S. Border Patrol April 19, 2020, at the Sierra Blanca, Texas, checkpoint due to an outstanding warrant, the release said. He had entered the U.S. "at an unknown date and location without being admitted or paroled by an immigration officer."

The Harris County Sheriff's Office received Ramos-Alvarado from the USBP on the same day, according to the release. Ramos-Alvarado's probation was revoked, and he was given a 30-day prison term April 30, 2020.
