Biden meets with Xi: 'we seek to reduce the flow of precursor chemicals and pill presses fueling the fentanyl crisis'

President Biden posted on X about a plan to combat the flow of precursor chemicals coming from China to combat the flow of fentanyl into the United States. People's Republic of China (PRC) President Xi Jinping met with Biden in California on Nov. 15.

"After years, the People's Republic of China and the United States are restarting cooperation on counternarcotics. In particular, we seek to reduce the flow of precursor chemicals and pill presses fueling the fentanyl crisis," said President Biden.

According to Axios, President Biden announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed to take measures to crack down on Chinese companies producing chemical precursors for fentanyl. This agreement is seen as a potential domestic victory for the Biden administration. The deal focuses on restricting the production and export of fentanyl precursor chemicals from China to Mexico.

"To be clear, this agreement will not end our fentanyl problem, but it will create challenges for drug traffickers and that's a good thing," said Keith Humphreys, a professor at Stanford University.

Xi Jinping gave a speech in San Francisco on Wednesday, Nov. 15. He said, "The fundamental principles that we follow in handling China-U.S. relations are mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation." He discussed China's commitment to a peaceful future. "We are ready to work with all countries to advance global modernization featuring peaceful development, mutually beneficial cooperation and common prosperity, and to build a community with a shared future for mankind."

On the fentanyl crisis, Xi said, "China sympathizes deeply with the American people, especially the young, for the sufferings that Fentanyl has inflicted upon them." He mentioned their agreement which includes a "working group on counternarcotics."

According to Time, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its willingness to work with the United States based on "equality and mutual respect."
