Senate committee to explore sports medicine's role in healthy aging

On June 25, Senator Rick Scott, Chair of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, along with Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand, will hold a hearing titled "Lessons from the Field: How Sports Medicine Can Improve Health Outcomes for Older Adults." The hearing aims to explore how sports medicine principles can be applied to support healthy aging. It will highlight innovative strategies used by sports medicine professionals and athletes to enhance mobility, prevent injuries, reduce healthcare costs, and promote longer and healthier lives as Americans age. Witnesses will also discuss the potential of interdisciplinary care, patient education, and community-based approaches for physical activity and injury prevention.

The witnesses scheduled to speak include Dr. E. Lyle Cain Jr., an orthopedic surgeon and team physician at the University of Alabama; Dr. Paul S. Legg, an orthopedic surgeon and team physician at the University of Charleston in West Virginia; former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselback; and Jennifer Raymond, Chief Strategy Officer at AgeSpan in Massachusetts.

The hearing is set for Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 3:30 PM in the Dirksen Senate Office Building SD-G50. A live stream will be available online.
