Buddy Hughes, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder and developer from Lexington, North Carolina, has called on the House of Representatives to pass legislation that would fund the federal government and extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through January 30, 2026. The Senate recently approved this measure.
“NAHB urges the House to quickly pass the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026 (H.R. 5371), which funds the government and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through Jan. 30, 2026. As the shutdown enters its sixth week, NAHB has warned lawmakers that the lapse in NFIP funding is delaying all new home sales and insurance renewals for property owners who have federally backed mortgages for homes or properties in flood-prone areas," Hughes said.
He further stated: “NAHB calls on Congress to retroactively reauthorize—and extend—the flood insurance program to provide certainty, predictability and peace of mind to policy holders who rely on the NFIP for flood protection and mitigation strategies.”
The ongoing government shutdown has entered its sixth week. According to NAHB, delays in NFIP funding are affecting new home sales as well as insurance renewals for homeowners with federally backed mortgages in areas at risk of flooding.
