Biden announces ban on Russian aircraft from U.S. airspace

Russian aircraft are barred from American airspace in response to the Russian invasion of the democratic state of Ukraine.

In his March 1 State of the Union address earlier this month, President Joe Biden announced his banning of Russian flights from American airspace, effective immediately. It has recently been reported many U.S. airlines have also made changes by suspending all air travel into Russian airspace. The president hopes his ban will further "squeeze" Russia's economy.

“I am announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American airspace to all Russian flights – further isolating Russia – and adding an additional squeeze – on their economy," Biden said according to a speech transcript from the White House.

The president hopes this change will contribute to Russia's isolation and economic shutout. He pointed out "the ruble has lost 30 percent of its value. The Russian stock market has lost 40 percent of its value, and trading remains suspended. Russia’s economy is reeling, and Putin alone is to blame."

CNBC reports the president has recently spoken extensively with most U.S. airlines about flying in Russian airspace.

Airlines such as United, Delta, American and United Parcel Service all confirmed with CNBC they had suspended flights over Russia.

Delta Air Lines also announced its decision to suspend its codesharing partnership with Russian airline Aeroflot, according to a Feb. 27 News Nation Now article.
