Neal Statement on New Reporting on Trump's Use of IRS to Target Political Enemies

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Nov. 14. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC-Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement in response to reporting that former President Trump repeatedly called for using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to target his political enemies:

"Finally, someone is saying the quiet part out loud and coming forward with firsthand knowledge of former President Trump's desire to weaponize the IRS for his own political gain. This is astounding and reminiscent of the Nixon era. When the Ways and Means Committee met with former Commissioner Rettig, he wholeheartedly assured us that previous reports of audits of former FBI Directors James Comey and Andrew McCabe were happenstance. It's now even clearer that there's more to the story.

"Even allegations of political targeting threaten IRS's credibility and our tax administration. The public must know the full extent of this wrongdoing, and those involved must be held accountable."
