On August 8, 2024, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya announced nearly $536 million in humanitarian assistance from the United States. This includes nearly $516 million through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and nearly $20 million through the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. This brings total U.S. humanitarian assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa to nearly $3.7 billion so far in Fiscal Year 2024.

Blinken spoke with Angolan President João Lourenço to express appreciation for Angola’s leadership in facilitating an agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda on an open-ended ceasefire in eastern DRC. Secretary Blinken commended President Lourenço and Foreign Minister Tete António for their diplomatic efforts and continued dedication to fostering peace in the region. He also conveyed U.S. support for the Angola-led Ad Hoc Verification Mechanism, which plays a crucial role in monitoring the ceasefire.

Today marks sixteen years since Russia's invasion of the sovereign nation of Georgia. The event is remembered for the lives lost, injuries sustained, and the displacement caused by Russia’s military campaign and subsequent occupation. Currently, Russia occupies 20 percent of Georgia’s territory and continues to assert control over the region, including through the claimed transfer of strategically important lands in Abkhazia to Russia and efforts to establish a permanent naval base in Ochamchire.

On the commemoration of the August 7, 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, we honor the memory of those who lost their lives on that tragic day. These horrific terrorist attacks killed 224 people, including 12 Americans serving our country overseas and 34 Kenyans and 10 Tanzanians who were part of our State Department family. More than 4,500 other individuals were injured that day.

Last week, the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) convened a meeting of senior officials in Washington, DC, as part of the U.S.-PRC Counternarcotics Working Group (CNWG). This group, launched in January 2024 following the decision by President Biden and President Xi to resume bilateral cooperation on counternarcotics, has coordinated bilateral efforts to combat the global manufacturing and trafficking of illicit synthetic drugs, including fentanyl.
